Prophets of God

Source
1. "A prophet is a man called by God to be His representative on earth. When a prophet speaks for God, it is as if God were speaking (see D&C 1:38). A prophet is also a special witness for Christ, testifying of His divinity and teaching His gospel. A prophet teaches truth and interprets the word of God. He calls the unrighteous to repentance. He receives revelations and directions from the Lord for our benefit. He may see into the future and foretell coming events so that the world may be warned" (Gospel Principles, p.39).

2. "Prophets... are given the priesthood–the power and authority given to man to act in God's name for the salvation of His children" (Preach My Gospel. p. 32)

3. "Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets" (Amos 3:7).

4. "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4).

5. "He that receiveth [the apostles] receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. He that receiveth a prophet... shall receive a prophet's reward" (Matthew 10:40-41).

Q Why do we need living prophets and apostles today?

6. "As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we are blessed to be led by living prophets—inspired men called to speak for the Lord, just as Moses, Isaiah, Peter, Paul, Nephi, Mormon, and other prophets of the scriptures. We sustain the President of the Church as our prophet, seer, and revelator—the only person on the earth who receives revelation to guide the entire Church. We also sustain the counselors in the First Presidency and the members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles as prophets, seers, and revelators." (True to the Faith, Prophets).

7. "The Lord’s mouthpiece and prophet on the face of the earth today received his [priesthood] authority through a line of prophets going back to Joseph Smith, who was ordained by Peter, James, and John, who were ordained by Christ, who was and is the head of the Church" (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Ezra Taft Benson, Chapter 11).

8. "Ye... are of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;.... And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive" (Ephesians 2:19-20; 4:11-14).

Q How do modern day prophets and apostles help to perfect the saints, help us be united in faith, and keep us from going astray?

As a missionary, I once talked with a christian woman who's church had recently split in two over a doctrinal issue. She said she knew God had the power to unify her church again, but she didn't know how He was going to do so. We pointed out to her that in times of disunity Paul's day, the Lord had Paul write a letter to give clear guidance as to what the Lord's will was and what the church should do going forward. The woman became very excited at this thought and exclaimed, "That is what my church needs! We need an epistle from an apostle to bring unity to my church again!"

We testified to her that God had called apostles and prophets in our day, and that the message we were sharing was that God wanted to bring Christians to a unity of the faith and know His will concerning building His kingdom and blessing the world.

Q How did you gain a testimony that true prophets and apostles lead the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?  (http://www.lds.org/prophets-and-apostles/unto-all-the-world/we-need-living-prophets?lang=eng)

Jesus taught that we can discern between true and false prophets by looking at their fruits, or results in the lives of individuals who follow their teachings:

9. "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits" (Matthew 7:15-16).

10. "And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things" (Moroni 10:5).

Blessings for Following God's Prophets and Apostles
Conditional Blessings of the Atonement of Jesus Christ: Forgiveness, salvation, exaltation, eternal families, hope, overcome weaknesses, godly character/divine attributes, self control, guidance, comfort, joy, peace, strength, healing, etc.

To receive the conditional blessings of the atonement, we must live the Gospel of Jesus Christ:
          ·         Faith- belief in, trust in, and commitment to obey Christ
          ·         Repent- submit will to Christ and change behavior to follow Him; seek forgiveness and a change of heart
          ·         Covenants- make/keep promises by priesthood authority to follow the example of Jesus Christ, such as baptism.
          ·         Holy Ghost- receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost, invite and follow His guidance
          ·         Endure to the end- consistently grow our faith, repent, keep our covenants, and receive the Holy Ghost

Q How do modern day prophets and apostles help us to live the gospel and receive the blessings of the atonement of Jesus Christ?

Q How did you gain a testimony of the importance of following the counsel of modern day prophets and apostles?

Q How have you been blessed for following modern day prophets and apostles? What difference have they made in your life?

11. "You can always trust the living prophets. Their teachings reflect the will of the Lord, who declared: 'What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse not myself; and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same' (D&C 1:38).

"Your greatest safety lies in strictly following the word of the Lord given through His prophets, particularly the current President of the Church. The Lord warns that those who ignore the words of the living prophets will fall (see D&C 1:14–16). He promises great blessings to those who follow the President of the Church: “Thou shalt give heed unto all his words and commandments which he shall give unto you as he receiveth them, walking in all holiness before me; “For his word ye shall receive, as if from mine own mouth, in all patience and faith. “For by doing these things the gates of hell shall not prevail against you; yea, and the Lord God will disperse the powers of darkness from before you, and cause the heavens to shake for your good, and his name’s glory” (D&C 21:4–6)" (True to the Faith, Prophets).

12. "The most important prophet, so far as we are concerned, is the one who is living in our day and age. This is the prophet who has today’s instructions from God to us. God’s revelation to Adam did not instruct Noah how to build the ark. Every generation has need of the ancient scripture, plus the current scripture from the living prophet.… Beware of those who would set up the dead prophets against the living prophets, for the living prophets always take precedence.... If we want to know how well we stand with the Lord then let us ask ourselves... how close do our lives harmonize with... The living Prophet—President of the Church, and with the Quorum of the First Presidency" (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Ezra Taft Benson, Chapter 11).

Q Why is the most important prophet for us the living prophet?

13. "Seek not to counsel the Lord, but to take counsel from his hand. For behold, ye yourselves know that he counseleth in wisdom, and in justice, and in great mercy, over all his works" (Jacob 4:10).

Q Why is it important for us to seek to take counsel from prophets and apostles instead of seeking to counsel or criticize them?

Q Why does Satan want us to discount or dismiss the teachings of prophets and apostles? How does he try to do this and how can we avoid these pitfalls?

14. "I have been a personal witness as both quiet inspiration and profound revelation have moved to action the prophets and apostles, the other General Authorities, and the auxiliary leaders. While neither perfect nor infallible, these good men and women have been perfectly dedicated to leading the work of the Lord forward as He has directed. And make no mistake about it: the Lord directs His Church through living prophets and apostles....

"It has always been a challenge for the world to accept living prophets and apostles, but it is... essential to do so in order to fully understand the Atonement and the teachings of Jesus Christ and to receive a fulness of the blessings of the priesthood.... Too many people think Church leaders and members should be perfect or nearly perfect. They forget that the Lord’s grace is sufficient to accomplish His work through mortals. Our leaders have the best intentions, but sometimes we make mistakes....

"Looking for human weakness in others is rather easy. However, we make a serious mistake by noticing only the human nature of one another and then failing to see God’s hand working through those He has called. Focusing on how the Lord inspires His chosen leaders and how He moves the Saints to do remarkable and extraordinary things despite their humanity is one way that we hold on to the gospel of Jesus Christ and stay safely aboard the Old Ship Zion" (M. Russell Ballard, Oct 2015 General Conference).

15. "Another potential destroyer of spiritual roots... is the keyhole view of the gospel or the Church. This limited view focuses on a particular doctrine or practice or perceived deficiency in a leader and ignores the grand panorama of the gospel plan and the personal and communal fruits of its harvest.... To be securely rooted in the gospel, we must be moderate and measured in criticism and seek always for the broader view of the majestic work of God" (Dallin H. Oaks, April 2015 General Conference).

Concluding Thoughts
16. "This world is full of so many self-help books, so many self-proclaimed experts, so many theorists, educators, and philosophers who have advice and counsel to give on any and all subjects. With technology today, information on a myriad of subjects is available with the click of a keystroke. It is easy to get caught in the trap of looking to the “arm of flesh”  for advice on everything from how to raise children to how to find happiness. While some information has merit, as members of the Church we have access to the source of pure truth, even God Himself.

"We would do well to search out answers to our problems and questions by investigating what the Lord has revealed through His prophets. With that same technology today, we have at our fingertips access to the words of the prophets on nearly any subject. What has God taught us about marriage and the family through His prophets? What has He taught us about education and provident living through His prophets? What has He taught us about personal happiness and fulfillment through His prophets?" (Kevin R. Duncan, October 2010).

Q If you could ask God any question, what would you ask Him? What have prophets taught about this?

Priesthood Organization

The Priesthood and Keys of the Priesthood
Holders of the priesthood are given the authority to act for the Lord and do His work on the earth. The priesthood is divided into two parts: the Melchizedek Priesthood and the Aaronic Priesthood (see D&C 107:1). “The first is called the Melchizedek Priesthood … because Melchizedek was such a great high priest. Before his day it was called the Holy Priesthood, after the Order of the Son of God. But out of respect or reverence to the name of the Supreme Being, to avoid the too frequent repetition of his name, they, the church, in ancient days, called that priesthood after Melchizedek, or the Melchizedek Priesthood” (D&C 107:2–4).

The Aaronic Priesthood is “an appendage to the greater, or the Melchizedek Priesthood” (D&C 107:14). It is called the Aaronic Priesthood because it was conferred on Aaron and his sons throughout all their generations. Those who hold the Aaronic Priesthood have authority to administer the outward ordinances of the sacrament and baptism. (See D&C 20:46;107:13–14, 20.). It is often called the preparatory priesthood. As a priesthood holder serves in the Aaronic Priesthood, he prepares to receive the Melchizedek Priesthood, to receive the blessings of the temple, to serve a full-time mission, to be a loving husband and father, and to continue in lifelong service to the Lord.

The Lord has instructed that the holders of the priesthood be organized into quorums. A quorum is a body of brethren holding the same priesthood office. Each quorum has a president with two counselors. Each quorum presidency can receive revelation (guidance) from the Lord for their quorum.

The exercise of priesthood authority in the Church is governed by those who hold priesthood keys (see D&C 65:2; 124:123). Those who hold priesthood keys have the right to preside over and direct the Church within a jurisdiction. For example, a bishop holds priesthood keys that enable him to preside in his ward. Therefore, when a child in that ward is prepared to be baptized, the person baptizing the child must receive authorization from the bishop. Holders of priesthood keys receive revelation only for those in their stewardship, and not for those who preside over them.

·         The Prophet and his two counselors form the first presidency, the highest governing body in the church, and preside over the entire church.

Auxiliaries to the Priesthood
All organizations in the Church work under the direction of priesthood leaders and help them carry out the work of the Lord. For example, the presidencies in a ward’s Relief Society, Young Women, Young Men, Primary, and Sunday School organizations serve under the direction of the bishopric. These organizations are called auxiliaries to the priesthood.

Scriptures

Source

1. "The scriptures are written records of God’s dealings with His children as recorded by prophets under the influence of the Holy Ghost.... The approved scriptures of the Church, also called the standard works, are the Holy Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. We should study these sacred books daily" (Preach My Gospel).

Q How can studying and applying  the scriptures help us to live the gospel and receive the blessings of the atonement of Jesus Christ?

Q What do the scriptures mean to you?

Q How have you seen the following blessings come as you have studied and applied the scriptures?

2. "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works" (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

3. "And I said unto them that... whoso would hearken unto the word of God, and would hold fast unto it, they would never perish; neither could the temptations and the fiery darts of the adversary overpower them unto blindness, to lead them away to destruction" (1 Nephi 15:17).

4. “I find that when I get casual in my relationships with divinity and when it seems that no divine ear is listening and no divine voice is speaking, that I am far, far away. If I immerse myself in the scriptures the distance narrows and the spirituality returns. I find myself loving more intensely those whom I must love with all my heart and mind and strength, and loving them more, I find it easier to abide their counsel” (Spencer W. Kimball, The Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, ed. Edward L. Kimball [1982], 135).

Bible
5. "The Bible is a collection of sacred writings... from the time of Adam through the time when the Apostles of Jesus Christ lived. They were written by many prophets who lived at various times in the history of the world. The Bible is divided into two sections: the Old Testament and the New Testament. Many prophecies in the Old Testament foretell the coming of a Savior and Redeemer. The New Testament tells of the life of that Savior and Redeemer, who is Jesus Christ. It also tells of the establishing of His Church in that day.

6. "The Bible literally contains within its pages the converting, healing Spirit of Christ, which has turned men’s hearts for centuries, leading them to pray, to choose right paths, and to search to find their Savior. The Holy Bible is well named. It is holy because it teaches truth, holy because it warms us with its spirit, holy because it teaches us to know God and understand His dealings with men, and holy because it testifies throughout its pages of the Lord Jesus Christ" (M. Russell Ballard, April 2007 General Conference).

Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ
7a. "The Book of Mormon is a sacred record of some of the people who lived on the American continents between about 2000 B.C. and A.D. 400. It contains the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ (see D&C 20:9; 42:12; 135:3). The Book of Mormon tells of the visit Jesus Christ made to the people in the Americas soon after His Resurrection. Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon into English through the gift and power of God" (Gospel Principles).

7b. "The Book of Mormon is powerful evidence of the divinity of Christ... [and] is convincing evidence that Joseph Smith was a prophet and that the gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored.... In order to know that the Book of Mormon is true, a person must read, ponder, and pray about it. The honest seeker of truth will soon come to feel that the Book of Mormon is the word of God" (Preach My Gospel).

Q Why did the gospel of Jesus Christ need to be restored? How is the Book of Mormon evidence that God restored the gospel through Joseph Smith?

Q How did you gain a testimony of the Book of Mormon?

8. "The Book of Mormon teaches us truth [and] bears testimony of Christ. … But there is something more. There is a power in the book which will begin to flow into your lives the moment you begin a serious study of the book. You will find greater power to resist temptation. You will find the power to avoid deception. You will find the power to stay on the strait and narrow path. The scriptures are called ‘the words of life,’ and nowhere is that more true than it is of the Book of Mormon. … ‘Every Latter-day Saint should make the study of this book a lifetime pursuit’” (Ezra T. Benson, October 1986 General Conference).

Q How have you seen these blessings come from studying the Book of Mormon?

Doctrine and Covenants
9a. "The Doctrine and Covenants contains revelations given to the Prophet Joseph Smith. It also includes a few revelations given to other latter-day prophets" (True to the Faith).

9b. "In the revelations, the doctrines of the gospel are set forth with explanations about such fundamental matters as the nature of the Godhead, the origin of man, the reality of Satan, the purpose of mortality, the necessity for obedience, the need for repentance, the workings of the Holy Spirit, the ordinances and performances that pertain to salvation, the destiny of the earth, the future conditions of man after the Resurrection and the Judgment, the eternity of the marriage relationship, and the eternal nature of the family. Likewise, the gradual unfolding of the administrative structure of the Church is shown with the calling of bishops, the First Presidency, the Council of the Twelve, and the Seventy and the establishment of other presiding offices and quorums. Finally, the testimony that is given of Jesus Christ—His divinity, His majesty, His perfection, His love, and His redeeming power—makes this book of great value to the human family and “worth to the Church the riches of the whole Earth” (see heading to D&C 70)" (Doctrine and Covenants, Introduction).

Pearl of Great Price
Additional truths brought forth by Joseph Smith.

Personal and Family Scripture Study
10. "Latter-day prophets counsel us to study the scriptures every day, both individually and with our families... [and to find] ways that the sacred accounts of old apply in our lives today (see 1 Nephi 19:23–24). They exhort us to “search the scriptures” (John 5:39) and “feast upon the words of Christ” (2 Nephi 32:3). You will benefit greatly by following this counsel. Daily, meaningful scripture study helps you be receptive to the whisperings of the Holy Ghost. It builds your faith, fortifies you against temptation, and helps you draw near to your Heavenly Father and His Beloved Son.

"Develop a plan for your personal study of the scriptures. Consider setting aside a certain amount of time each day to study the scriptures. During that time, read carefully, being attentive to the promptings of the Spirit. Ask your Heavenly Father to help you know what He would have you learn and do.... Set aside time each day to read the scriptures as a family. This effort may be difficult, but it will yield wonderful, eternal results. Under the guidance of the Spirit, plan scripture reading that will meet the needs of your family. Do not be afraid of reading the scriptures to small children. The language of those sacred records has power to touch even the very young" (True to the Faith).

Q What tips do you have to make personal daily scripture study a success? Family scripture study?

Q Why is it important to regularly and consistently read the scriptures personally and as families?

11. "I feel certain that if, in our homes, parents will read from the Book of Mormon prayerfully and regularly, both by themselves and with their children, the spirit of that great book will come to permeate our homes and all who dwell therein. The spirit of reverence will increase; mutual respect and consideration for each other will grow. The spirit of contention will depart. Parents will counsel their children in greater love and wisdom. Children will be more responsive and submissive to the counsel of their parents. Righteousness will increase. Faith, hope, and charity—the pure love of Christ—will abound in our homes and lives, bringing in their wake peace, joy, and happiness" (Ensign, May 1980, p. 67).

Q How have you seen these blessings come from studying the Book of Mormon as a family?

The Restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ

Source

Apostasy from the Church Jesus Christ Established in New Testament Times

"After the deaths of the Savior and His Apostles, men corrupted the principles of the gospel and made unauthorized changes in Church organization and priesthood ordinances. Because of this widespread wickedness, the Lord withdrew the authority of the priesthood from the earth.

"During the Great Apostasy, people were without divine direction from living prophets. Many churches were established, but they did not have priesthood power to lead people to the true knowledge of God the Father and Jesus Christ. Parts of the holy scriptures were corrupted or lost, and no one had the authority to confer the gift of the Holy Ghost or perform other priesthood ordinances. This apostasy lasted until Heavenly Father and His Beloved Son appeared to Joseph Smith in 1820 and initiated the restoration of the fullness of the gospel" (True to the Faith, Apostasy).

"Throughout history, many people have sincerely believed false creeds and doctrines. They have worshiped according to the light they possessed and have received answers to their prayers. Yet they are “kept from the truth because they know not where to find it” (D&C 123:12)" (Preach My Gospel).

For more information about the Great Apostasy, see

Why did there need to be a restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ?
Q What needed to be restored?
·         Revelation from God through apostles and prophets
·         Priesthood keys and authority
·         Church organization
·         The principles, ordinances, and covenants of the Gospel of Jesus Christ for the living and dead
·         Important truths

For more information about what needed to be restored, see http://ldsgospellessons.blogspot.com/2014/03/NTChurch.html

Q What blessings have come to you from each of the following that were restored?

Revelation Restored

From the writings of Joseph Smith about his experience in 1820 when he was about 14 years old:

"There was in the place where we lived an unusual excitement on the subject of religion.... So great were the confusion and strife among the different denominations, that it was impossible... to come to any certain conclusion who was right and who was wrong.... I often said to myself: What is to be done?  Who of all these parties are right; or, are they all wrong together?  If any one of them be right, which is it, and how shall I know it?....

"I was one day reading the Epistle of James, first chapter and fifth verse, which reads: If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. Never did any passage of scripture come with more power to the heart of man than this did at this time to mine.  It seemed to enter with great force into every feeling of my heart.... For how to act I did not know, and unless I could get more wisdom than I then had, I would never know; for the teachers of religion of the different sects understood the same passages of scripture so differently as to destroy all confidence in settling the question by an appeal to the Bible. At length I came to the conclusion that I must either remain in darkness and confusion, or else I must do as James directs, that is, ask of God....

"I retired to the woods [to pray].... I kneeled down and began to offer up the desires of my heart to God.... I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me.... When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air.  One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son.  Hear Him!....

"No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able to speak, than I asked the Personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was right... and which I should join. I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: "they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof."....

"It seems as though the adversary was aware, at a very early period of my life, that I was destined to prove a disturber and an annoyer of his kingdom.... I soon found... that my telling the story had excited a great deal of prejudice against me among professors of religion, and was the cause of great persecution.

"However, it was nevertheless a fact that I had beheld a vision.  I have thought since, that I felt much like Paul, when he made his defense before King Agrippa, and related the account of the vision he had when he saw a light, and heard a voice; but still there were but few who believed him; some said he was dishonest, others said he was mad; and he was ridiculed and reviled.  But all this did not destroy the reality of his vision.  He had seen a vision, he knew he had, and all the persecution under heaven could not make it otherwise; and though they should persecute him unto death, yet he knew, and would know to his latest breath, that he had both seen a light and heard a voice speaking unto him, and all the world could not make him think or believe otherwise.

"So it was with me.  I had actually seen a light, and in the midst of that light I saw two Personages, and they did in reality speak to me; and though I was hated and persecuted for saying that I had seen a vision, yet it was true; and while they were persecuting me, reviling me, and speaking all manner of evil against me falsely for so saying, I was led to say in my heart: Why persecute me for telling the truth?  I have actually seen a vision; and who am I that I can withstand God, or why does the world think to make me deny what I have actually seen?  For I had seen a vision; I knew it, and I knew that God knew it, and I could not deny it, neither dared I do it; at least I knew that by so doing I would offend God, and come under condemnation.

Priesthood Keys and Authority Restored

"After the appearance of the Father and the Son, other heavenly messengers, or angels, were sent to Joseph Smith and his associate Oliver Cowdery. John the Baptist appeared and conferred upon Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery the Aaronic Priesthood, which includes the authority to perform the ordinance of baptism. Peter, James, and John (three of Christ’s original Apostles) appeared and conferred the Melchizedek Priesthood upon Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery, restoring the same authority given to Christ’s Apostles anciently" (Preach My Gospel).

"The Savior appeared to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery in the Kirtland Temple. Moses, Elias, and Elijah also appeared and gave priesthood keys to Joseph and Oliver. Elijah brought the keys of the sealing power, which make it possible for families to be sealed together forever. (See D&C 110.)" (True to the Faith, Restoration of the Gospel).

Church Organization Restored

"With this priesthood authority, Joseph Smith was directed to organize the Church of Jesus Christ again on the earth. Through him, Jesus Christ called twelve Apostles.... A living prophet directs the Church today. This prophet, the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is the authorized successor to Joseph Smith. He and the present Apostles trace their authority to Jesus Christ in an unbroken chain of ordinations through Joseph Smith" (Preach My Gospel).

"The Church was organized with the same offices as were in the ancient Church. That organization included apostles, prophets, seventies, evangelists (patriarchs), pastors (presiding officers), high priests, elders, bishops, priests, teachers, and deacons....

"The Church has grown much larger than it was in the days of Jesus. As it has grown, the Lord has revealed additional units of organization within the Church. When the Church is fully organized in an area, it has local divisions called stakes. A stake president and his two counselors preside over each stake.... Each stake is divided into smaller areas called wards. A bishop and his two counselors preside over each ward. In areas of the world where the Church is developing, there are districts, which are like stakes. Districts are divided into smaller units called branches, which are like wards" (Gospel Principles, The Church of Jesus Christ Today).

The Lord said "For thus shall my church be called in the last days, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" (D&C 115:4) and that this church is " the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth, with which I, the Lord, am well pleased" (D&C 1:30).

Q Why did the Lord give this name to His church?

Principles, Ordinances, and Covenants of the Gospel of Jesus Christ Restored; Important Truths Restored

"Knowing that doubt, disbelief, and misinformation would remain after centuries of darkness, our loving Heavenly Father brought forth an ancient volume of holy scripture comparable to the Bible, which contains the fulness of the everlasting gospel of Jesus Christ. This volume of holy scripture provides convincing evidence that Joseph Smith is a true prophet of God. This record is the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ.

"Joseph Smith was directed by a heavenly messenger named Moroni to a hill where gold plates had lain hidden for centuries. These gold plates contained the writings of prophets giving an account of God’s dealings with some of the ancient inhabitants of the Americas. Joseph Smith translated the contents of these plates by the power of God. The prophets in the Book of Mormon knew about the mission of the Savior and taught His gospel. After His Resurrection, Christ appeared to these people. He taught them His gospel and established His Church.... In order to know that the Book of Mormon is true, a person must read, ponder, and pray about it. The honest seeker of truth will soon come to feel that the Book of Mormon is the word of God" (Preach My Gospel).

"We invite all men everywhere to read the Book of Mormon, to ponder in their hearts the message it contains, and then to ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ if the book is true. Those who pursue this course and ask in faith will gain a testimony of its truth and divinity by the power of the Holy Ghost. (See Moroni 10:3–5.)

"Those who gain this divine witness from the Holy Spirit will also come to know by the same power that Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world, that Joseph Smith is his revelator and prophet in these last days, and that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the Lord's kingdom once again established on the earth, preparatory to the second coming of the Messiah" (Book of Mormon, Introduction).

Q Why is it important to have a testimony of the Restoration, Joseph Smith, and the Book of Mormon?
Q How do we gain testimonies of these things? How did you gain your testimony?
Q How do we keep our testimonies of these things fresh and growing?

Conclusion

"This is the restored Church of Jesus Christ. We as a people are Latter-day Saints. We testify that the heavens have been opened, that the curtains have been parted, that God has spoken, and that Jesus Christ has manifested Himself, followed by a bestowal of divine authority. Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of this work, and it is built upon a “foundation of … apostles and prophets” (Eph. 2:20).

"This wondrous Restoration should make of us a people of tolerance, of neighborliness, of appreciation and kindness toward others. We cannot be boastful. We cannot be proud. We can be thankful, as we must be. We can be humble, as we should be.

"We love those of other churches. We work with them in good causes. We respect them. But we must never forget our roots. Those roots lie deep in the soil of the opening of this, the final dispensation, the dispensation of the fulness of times....

"God be thanked for His marvelous bestowal of testimony, authority, and doctrine associated with this, the restored Church of Jesus Christ.

"This must be our great and singular message to the world. We do not offer it with boasting. We testify in humility but with gravity and absolute sincerity. We invite all, the whole earth, to listen to this account and take measure of its truth. God bless us as those who believe in His divine manifestations and help us to extend knowledge of these great and marvelous occurrences to all who will listen. To these we say in a spirit of love, bring with you all that you have of good and truth which you have received from whatever source, and come and let us see if we may add to it. This invitation I extend to men and women everywhere with my solemn testimony that this work is true, for I know the truth of it by the power of the Holy Ghost. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen" (Gordon B. Hinckley, October 2002 General Conference).

"The ultimate purpose of all we teach is to unite parents and children in faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, that they are happy at home, sealed in an eternal marriage, linked to their generations, and assured of exaltation in the presence of our Heavenly Father" (Boyd K. Packer, April 1995 General Conference).

Testimonies of the Restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ

Speaking of the Book of Mormon, George Q. Cannon said "No wicked man could write such a book as this; and no good man would write it, unless it were true and he were commanded of God to do so.” (quoted by Jeffery R. Holland, October 2009 General Conference).
