1. "The
scriptures are written records of God’s dealings with His children as recorded
by prophets under the influence of the Holy Ghost.... The approved scriptures
of the Church, also called the standard works, are the Holy Bible, the Book of
Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. We should
study these sacred books daily" (Preach My Gospel).
Conditional Blessings of the Atonement of Jesus Christ: Forgiveness, salvation, exaltation, eternal families, hope, overcome weaknesses, godly character/divine attributes, self control, guidance, comfort, joy, peace, strength, healing, etc.
To receive the conditional blessings of the atonement, we must live the Gospel of Jesus Christ:
· Faith- belief in, trust in, and commitment to obey Christ
· Repent- submit will to Christ and change behavior to follow Him; seek forgiveness and a change of heart
· Covenants- make/keep promises by priesthood authority to follow the example of Jesus Christ, such as baptism.
· Holy Ghost- receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost, invite and follow His guidance
· Endure to the end- consistently grow our faith, repent, keep our covenants, and receive the Holy Ghost

Q How can studying and applying the scriptures help us to live the gospel and
receive the blessings of the atonement of Jesus Christ?
Q What do the scriptures
mean to you?
Q How have you
seen the following blessings come as you have studied and applied the
scriptures?
2. "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is
profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in
righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished
unto all good works" (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
3. "And I said unto them that... whoso would hearken unto the
word of God, and would hold fast unto it, they would never perish; neither
could the temptations and the fiery darts of the adversary overpower them unto
blindness, to lead them away to destruction" (1 Nephi 15:17).
4. “I find that
when I get casual in my relationships with divinity and when it seems that no
divine ear is listening and no divine voice is speaking, that I am far, far
away. If I immerse myself in the scriptures the distance narrows and the
spirituality returns. I find myself loving more intensely those whom I must
love with all my heart and mind and strength, and loving them more, I find it
easier to abide their counsel” (Spencer W. Kimball, The
Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, ed.
Edward L. Kimball [1982], 135).
Bible
5. "The Bible
is a collection of sacred writings... from the time of Adam through the time
when the Apostles of Jesus Christ lived. They were written by many prophets who
lived at various times in the history of the world. The Bible is divided into two sections: the Old
Testament and the New Testament. Many prophecies in the Old Testament foretell
the coming of a Savior and Redeemer. The New Testament tells of the life of
that Savior and Redeemer, who is Jesus Christ. It also tells of the
establishing of His Church in that day.
6. "The Bible literally contains within its pages the
converting, healing Spirit of Christ, which has turned men’s hearts for centuries,
leading them to pray, to choose right paths, and to search to find their
Savior. The Holy Bible is well named. It is holy because it teaches truth, holy
because it warms us with its spirit, holy because it teaches us to know God and
understand His dealings with men, and holy because it testifies throughout its
pages of the Lord Jesus Christ" (M. Russell Ballard, April 2007 General
Conference).
Book of Mormon:
Another Testament of Jesus Christ
7a. "The Book
of Mormon is a sacred record of some of the people who lived on the American
continents between about 2000 B.C. and A.D. 400. It
contains the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ (see D&C
20:9; 42:12; 135:3). The Book of Mormon tells of the visit Jesus
Christ made to the people in the Americas soon after His Resurrection. Joseph
Smith translated the Book of Mormon into English through the gift and power of
God" (Gospel Principles).
7b. "The Book
of Mormon is powerful evidence of the divinity of Christ... [and] is convincing
evidence that Joseph Smith was a prophet and that the gospel of Jesus Christ
has been restored.... In order to know that the Book of Mormon is true, a
person must read, ponder, and pray about it. The honest seeker of truth will
soon come to feel that the Book of Mormon is the word of God" (Preach My
Gospel).
Q Why did the
gospel of Jesus Christ need to be restored? How is the Book of Mormon evidence
that God restored the gospel through Joseph Smith?
Q How did you gain
a testimony of the Book of Mormon?
8. "The Book
of Mormon teaches us truth [and] bears testimony of Christ. … But there is
something more. There is a power in the book which will begin to flow into your
lives the moment you begin a serious study of the book. You will find greater
power to resist temptation. You will find the power to avoid deception. You
will find the power to stay on the strait and narrow path. The scriptures are
called ‘the words of life,’ and nowhere is that more true than it is of the
Book of Mormon. … ‘Every Latter-day Saint should make the study of this book a
lifetime pursuit’” (Ezra T. Benson, October 1986 General Conference).
Q How have you
seen these blessings come from studying the Book of Mormon?
Doctrine and
Covenants
9a. "The
Doctrine and Covenants contains revelations given to the Prophet Joseph Smith.
It also includes a few revelations given to other latter-day prophets"
(True to the Faith).
9b. "In the
revelations, the doctrines of the gospel are set forth with explanations about
such fundamental matters as the nature of the Godhead, the origin of man, the
reality of Satan, the purpose of mortality, the necessity for obedience, the
need for repentance, the workings of the Holy Spirit, the ordinances and
performances that pertain to salvation, the destiny of the earth, the future
conditions of man after the Resurrection and the Judgment, the eternity of the
marriage relationship, and the eternal nature of the family. Likewise, the
gradual unfolding of the administrative structure of the Church is shown with the
calling of bishops, the First Presidency, the Council of the Twelve, and the
Seventy and the establishment of other presiding offices and quorums. Finally,
the testimony that is given of Jesus Christ—His divinity, His majesty, His
perfection, His love, and His redeeming power—makes this book of great value to
the human family and “worth to the Church the riches of the whole Earth” (see
heading to D&C 70)" (Doctrine and Covenants, Introduction).

Personal and Family
Scripture Study
10. "Latter-day
prophets counsel us to study the scriptures every day, both individually and
with our families... [and to find] ways that the sacred accounts of old apply
in our lives today (see 1 Nephi 19:23–24). They exhort us to
“search the scriptures” (John 5:39) and “feast upon the
words of Christ” (2 Nephi 32:3). You will benefit
greatly by following this counsel. Daily, meaningful scripture study helps you
be receptive to the whisperings of the Holy Ghost. It builds your faith,
fortifies you against temptation, and helps you draw near to your Heavenly
Father and His Beloved Son.
"Develop a plan for your personal study
of the scriptures. Consider setting aside a certain amount of time each day to
study the scriptures. During that time, read carefully, being attentive to the
promptings of the Spirit. Ask your Heavenly Father to help you know what He
would have you learn and do.... Set aside time each day to read the scriptures
as a family. This effort may be difficult, but it will yield wonderful, eternal
results. Under the guidance of the Spirit, plan scripture reading that will
meet the needs of your family. Do not be afraid of reading the scriptures to
small children. The language of those sacred records has power to touch even
the very young" (True to the Faith).
Q What tips do you have to make personal daily scripture
study a success? Family scripture study?
Q Why is it important
to regularly and consistently read the scriptures personally and as families?
11. "I feel certain
that if, in our homes, parents will read from the Book of Mormon prayerfully
and regularly, both by themselves and with their children, the spirit of that
great book will come to permeate our homes and all who dwell therein. The
spirit of reverence will increase; mutual respect and consideration for each
other will grow. The spirit of contention will depart. Parents will counsel
their children in greater love and wisdom. Children will be more responsive and
submissive to the counsel of their parents. Righteousness will increase. Faith,
hope, and charity—the pure love of Christ—will abound in our homes and lives,
bringing in their wake peace, joy, and happiness" (Ensign, May 1980, p.
67).
